The U.S. Commerce Department is set to propose regulations that would ban Chinese software from autonomous and connected vehicles in the United States, according to a report by Reuters citing sources briefed on the matter.
The forthcoming rule aims to prohibit Chinese software in vehicles with Level 3 automation and higher, effectively banning the testing of autonomous vehicles from Chinese companies on U.S. roads.
Earlier this year, Biden’s Administration announced a 400% tariff increases on Chinese imports, including electric vehicles (EVs), solar panels, and semiconductors to “protect American workers and American companies from China’s unfair trade practices”.
These products will face significant tariff increases, with the tariff on electric vehicles (EVs) rising sharply from 25 percent to 100 percent.
The proposed rule from the Commerce Department will restrict vehicles equipped with Chinese-developed advanced wireless communication modules from operating in the country.
Automakers and suppliers will be required to verify that their connected vehicle and advanced autonomous vehicle software are not developed by “foreign entities of concern,” such as China, according to Reuters.
Speaking to Reuters, a Commerce Department spokesperson said the department “is concerned about the national security risks associated with connected technologies in connected vehicles.”
