Subaru, Toyota, and Mazda are joining forces to develop new engines designed for electrification and carbon neutrality.

On Tuesday, the automotive giants announced that the collaboration aims to integrate motors, batteries, and other electric drive units more efficiently while creating more compact engines that fit better in modern vehicle designs.

“In an era when the development of battery electric vehicle technology is accelerating, there is a new role we can pursue for the internal combustion engine as well,” Toyota’s CEO Koji Sato said at the event.

The automotive initiative also seeks to decarbonize internal combustion engines (ICEs) by making them compatible with various carbon-neutral fuels.

“Achieving a carbon-neutral society is a collective challenge for all of Japan’s industries,” said Subaru CEO Atsushi Osaki. “We aim to refine electrification technology and enhance our horizontally-opposed engines to use carbon-neutral fuels.”

The new engines will enhance standalone performance and optimize integration with electric drive units. These engines will be more compact, allowing for lower hoods and better aerodynamics, which contribute to improved fuel efficiency.

“In providing diverse options for carbon neutrality, it’s crucial to evolve engines in line with future energy environments,” Toyota CEO Koji Sato noted.

Shifting away from fossil fuels, the new engines will support various carbon-neutral alternatives, including synthetic fuels, biofuels, and liquid hydrogen. The automakers aim that the shift helps the broader adoption of carbon-neutral fuels, aligning with global sustainability goals.
