As the electric vehicle industry in China accelerates its pace of development, car makers are increasingly pressured to release updated versions of their models to stay competitive. The Shanghai-based Nio is no exception.
The ET7 sedan, the first model from the company’s second-generation platform, was initially unveiled in January 2021, with deliveries starting in March 2022.
The second generation of this flagship sedan was introduced 13 months later, in April 2023 — at the Shanghai Auto Show — with the first units being delivered in late April 2024.

“Nio’s main brand will launch four new models in 2025. These include the ET9 sedan, codenamed Leo; the ES8 SUV [EL8 in Europe], codenamed Draco; the ES7 SUV [EL7 in Europe], codenamed Cetus; and the ET6 sedan, codenamed Vela,” the message spread on Chinese social media platform Weibo showed.
In a recent note sent to clients last week, Deutsche Bank analyst Wang Bin said Nio will launch the ET9 sedan (planned for the first quarter of the year), the third generation of the SUVs ES8 and ES7, and a brand new sedan named ET6.
Based on the statements, both the Nio ET5 sedan and its touring version (ET5T) will not be upgraded next year. When contacted by EV, a Nio spokesperson declined to comment on the rumours that have been circulating on Weibo.
Last month, Nio’s chief executive CEO pointed out the need for electric vehicle manufacturers to put the consumer’s interest first as the lack of “systematic thinking” can harm users’ trust in the brand.
In June, Nio launched in Europe the second generation of its flagship SUV ES8 (EL8). Deliveries are planned to start over the next few days across Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.
After being the first-ever production model from the Shanghai-based brand, Nio first unveiled the second generation of the SUV at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2023.
