Volvo Cars has announced on Thursday that its Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO, Javier Varela is leaving the company with immediate effect to “pursue new opportunities outside the company”.
Varela was an integral part of Volvo’s Executive Management Team since 2016 and served as COO and deputy CEO since 2022.
Anders Bell, who has been the Head of Engineering for Volvo Cars since 2022, will take on the role of Chief Engineering & Technology Officer. Bell brings with him 25 years of engineering experience, including 18 years at Volvo Cars and six years in senior positions at Tesla.
Erik Severinson, who is with Volvo Cars for 20 years, steps into the position of Chief Product & Strategy Officer while Francesca Gamboni is appointed the Chief Supply Chain Officer.
The automaker announced recently a 25 per cent year-over-year rise in March sales, reaching a new record of 78,970 cars sold. Total global sales for the first quarter of 2024 reached 182,687 cars, marking a 12 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
