Tesla’s UK vehicle registrations dropped 7.78% in January to 1,458 units as the company prepares to start global deliveries of its refreshed Model Y.

A year ago, Elon Musk’s company recorded sales of 1,581 units in the UK. Tesla primarily supplies the UK market with vehicles produced at its Gigafactory in Shanghai.

These vehicles are usually manufactured at the start of the quarter, shipped in the middle, and delivered in bulk toward the quarter’s end. Last year, Tesla’s sales more than doubled from January to February and then doubled again in March.

BEV sales in the UK rose by 41% in January to 29,634 reaching a market share of 21.3%.

Registrations in Germany fell 59.5% year over year in January to 1,277 units. In France, Tesla registered 1,141 vehicles last month, down 63% from 3,118 in January 2024. In the Netherlands, registrations fell 42% to 927 units.

In the U.S., registrations dropped 10% year over year in January, according to Motor Intelligence estimates released on Tuesday. The company registered 48,500 vehicles, down from the 53,830 recorded a year ago.

According to the SMMT, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 19.6% of all new passenger car registrations in the UK in 2024, with a total of 1,952,778 cars registered.

MG, the China-owned brand, recorded 5,440 registrations, down 19% both sequentially and year over year. BYD sold 1,614 hybrid and fully electric vehicles hitting a new record since entering the market in March 2023.

California New Car Dealers Association said on Monday that registrations in the state fell 12% from January 2024.

Last week, at the Q4 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he “sees a path” of Tesla being the most valuable company in the world by far.” Musk added later in the call that the company is “setting up for what I think will be an epic 2026 and a ridiculous ’27 and ’28, ridiculously good.”
