Electric carmaker Nio registered 31 vehicles in Germany in December bringing its annual sales to 398 vehicles, according to data shared by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority.

The Shanghai-based electric vehicle maker, which entered the German market in October 2022, saw its sales falling 68.5% from the 1,263 units recorded in the previous year. Germany brought its EV subsidy program to an abrupt halt at the end of 2023.

After extending in October its 0% financing incentive for its two sedans — the Nio ET7 and ET5 — through the end of 2024, the EV maker announced an additional direct discount in mid-December for customers purchasing one of its sedans.

By then, the EV maker started offering a €15,000 discount on its flagship ET7 sedan, and a €8,000 price reduction for the smaller, more affordable ET5 until the year end.

In 2024, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Germany have declined by 24.2% to 380,609 units, largely due to the removal of EV incentives at the end of 2023. The market share of BEVs has fallen to 13.5%.

Contrarily, hybrid vehicle sales have risen by 12.7% to 947,398 registrations, accounting for 33.6% of the market. Among these, plug-in hybrids saw a 9.2% increase to 191,905 units, representing a market share of 6.8%.

Lucid Motors sold 392 vehicles in Germany last year with the purchase agreement with the rental car firm SIXT being responsible for most of the units recorded. In December, the U.S. EV maker registered 20 vehicles.

Tesla experienced a 41% decline in annual registrations in Germany, while Geely-backed Polestar registered approximately half the units it sold in 2023, resulting in a market share of less than 1.5%. Although Tesla’s December registrations increased by 77% month-over-month to 3,905 units, they still fell short of the figures recorded during the same period in 2023.

XPeng and BYD, which play in a cheaper segment than Nio or Lucid, recorded 393 and 2,891 units, respectively. plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles.

As part of its entry into the taxi industry, Nio announced in July a partnership with the ride-hailing platform Freenow, offering specific pricing conditions for operators integrating Nio vehicles into their fleets.
