Nio is making a significant reshuffle within its smart driving research and development team, including leadership shifts in its delivery and “end-to-end” solution teams, Chinese media outlet Latepost reported on Tuesday.

The report, which has been just confirmed by the EV maker, said the restructuring follows underwhelming results in the delivery of Nio’s smart driving solutions and slow progress in developing its “end-to-end” autonomous driving technologies.

The adjustments affect several sub-divisions of the smart driving department, including the large model division, deployment architecture and solutions division, and spatiotemporal information division.

Ren Shaoqing, Vice President of Smart Driving R&D, will replace Peng Chao to lead the large model division. Chen Kunsheng will take over from Qin Hailong as head of the deployment architecture and solutions division. Yuan Hongyuan, head of the spatiotemporal information division, has resigned, and Zhang Hongxia, previously with Baidu, has been appointed to the role.

When asked about the personnel changes, Nio told LatePost that the adjustments are intended to improve feature delivery, address multi-platform and multi-functional requirements, and adapt to technological and product developments.

Nio announced last week that its Banyan 3.1.0 update will introduce Automatic Emergency Steering (AES) in China, built on a large model framework allowing the company to join Huawei and Li Auto as the only Chinese brands offering the technology.

Nio unveiled the ET9, a luxury sedan priced at 788,000 yuan ($107,900), during its annual event in Guangzhou on Saturday.

The company also introduced a limited “First Edition” of 999 units, priced at 818,000 yuan ($112,100), with deliveries in China scheduled to begin in March 2025. Nio’s founder and CEO, William Li, stated on Sunday that the ET9’s First Edition sold out the 999 units about 12 hours after the launch event.
