Japanese automakers Honda Motor and Nissan Motor will enter negotiations toward a merger aiming to fight competition from global rivals Tesla and Chinese electric vehicle makers, Nikkei reported on Tuesday.
The report added that the auto giants “are considering operating under a holding company” adding that they will “soon sign a memorandum of understanding.” ”
In August, both carmakers announced that they would start to carry out joint research in fundamental technologies in the area of platforms for next-generation software-defined vehicles.
By then, the Japanese brands had already teased that they would “continue to study ways to create further synergies between the two companies and work toward the speedy implementation of specific measures.”
The Nissan LEAF, the automaker’s entry-level EV, is the most affordable electric vehicle in the U.S., with a starting price of $28,140. Between July and September, the Japanese brand sold about 4,500 units in the United States.
In China, the world’s largest car market, Nissan’s sales dropped 11% year-on-year in the first 11 months, totaling 621,713 vehicles.
