Electric vehicle maker Lucid Motors has made progress in its trademark application for “Lucid Ocean,” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issuing a Notice of Allowance (NOA) on November 19 indicating that no opposition was filed during the application’s publication period.

Lucid’s trademark filing for “Lucid Ocean” was submitted on May 30. While it remains uncertain whether the name will be used for an actual vehicle, the filing ensures that the company led by Peter Rawlinson reserves the right to do so.

The EV maker has previously registered and abandoned several other trademarks, including “Air 1,” “Palos,” and “Pure Spec.” However, other filings, such as “Lucid Earth” and “Air Cross,” and “Cross Air” remain active.

Lucid plans to introduce a new mid-size SUV under $50,000 in late 2026 targeting Tesla’s Model Y, the best selling car worldwide in 2023. The first teaser image was shared in September.

Lucid now has six months from the issue date to submit a Statement of Use (SOU) demonstrating that the trademark is being used in commerce or to request an extension for additional time. The company may file up to five six-month extensions if needed, with a maximum deadline of three years from the NOA issuance to file an SOU.

The trademark filing has sparked speculation about whether “Ocean” could become the name of a future battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from Lucid Motors. While the automaker has not confirmed plans for a model under this name, the trademark aligns with its established naming convention of using elemental themes, as seen with the Lucid Air and the upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV.

The name “Ocean” may evoke comparisons with the Fisker Ocean, the first (and only) electric SUV from Fisker, the EV maker founded by Henrik Fisker which filed bankruptcy in June.

In August, the company’s Vice-President of Design and Brand Derek Jenkins said the mid-size platform will serve three models

Despite Jenkins did not specify which vehicle segments would be, the executive was asked about station wagons by saying they’re “a dying segment, even in Europe,” while adding “I don’t see us going out on that limb.”

The executive stated that the three upcoming cheaper models would be “younger vehicles, they’re going to be more athletic vehicles.”
