RWE, the third-largest renewable energy company in the United States, has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with electric vehicle maker Rivian for energy from RWE’s Champion Wind project in West Texas, the companies said on Thursday.
The agreement will supply 127 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the Champion Wind farm, located in Nolan and Mitchell Counties, to power Rivian’s Adventure Network of fast-charging stations with renewable energy.
Rivian is installing more than 3,500 fast chargers at roughly 600 locations along major U.S. highways and popular routes, aimed at providing up to 140 miles of range in 20 minutes.
The Champion Wind project is undergoing upgrades, including new turbine nacelles and blades, and is expected to complete the retrofitting by mid-2025.
The EV maker had recently announced another partnership with Patagonia and Sol Systems to promote renewable energy and support the education of younger generations in North Carolina.
The program will allow students to use advanced robotics kits such as Lego Spike Prime and Parrot Mambo Drones eyeing real-world applications in sustainability.
Last year, in July 2023, Rivian said it would collaborate with BrightNight and The Nature Conservancy in Eastern Kentucky aiming to make the largest conversion of a former coal mining site to a solar project in the United States.
